Sun Temple
"This shrine (built 1027) to the sun-god Surya, 78km northwest of Ahmedabad, is arguably the finest piece of Hindu architecture in western India. It is also the most important surviving building of the Solanki Dynasty, which flourished in Gujarat between the 10th and 13th centuries. It is one of only three major sun temples in India (the others are at Konarak in Orissa and in Kashmir). The temple complex consists of two beautifully and richly decorated religious buildings, with lavish stone carvings of animals, gods and humans—and a remarkable stepped water tank."
